Although these tiny particles continue to contribute to the water pollution problem, local researchers are exploring new solutions.


"These are everyday sights in Puerto Rico today," said Jorge Bauzá, pointing to photos of piles of plastic bottles, garbage bags and foam coolers piled up on idyllic beaches.

"We still have a long way to go to change this plastic culture," emphasized the oceanographer and scientific director of the San Juan Bay Estuary Program, during the annual conference of the Puerto Rico College of Chemists -PR Chem- held recently.

Ciencia Puerto Rico joins the COVID-19 Wisdom Coalition (COSACO), the Citizen Health Committee (CCS), Vistazo a la Ciencia, Periódico Nuestro, and Mentes Puertorriqueñas en Acción (MPA) to urgently ask the mayor of San Juan, the Hon. Carmen Yulín Cruz to take immediate action to integrate the municipality of San Juan into the Municipal System for Case Investigation and Contact Tracking (SMICRC). Currently, the capital city is the only municipality in Puerto Rico that does not participate in the SMICRC, despite having the highest incidence of infections and deaths in the entire archipelago. The Puerto Rico Public Health Trust (PRPHT), was given the task of developing the “Achú” Activity Book, to educate children about the new Coronavirus COVID-19. The book was created with the idea of ​​raising awareness in children, in a simple and fun way, of the world’s reality in relation to this disease, which is already considered a global pandemic, and nobody is exempt from it.

The Puerto Rico Public Health Trust is part of the 16 programs of the P.R. Science, Technology & Research Trust.

Free public health training for volunteers

The workshops will be at the INEDA facilities at UMET Bayamón.

The Metropolitan University in Bayamón will offer free public health disaster training for people who wish to be volunteer instructors in the reception centers of the World Cares Center, an organization in the United States that empowers communities to respond to disasters. The workshops will be offered on November 9 and 10 at the Institute of Environmental Education (INEDA) from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
