The SciComm Identities Project (SCIP) is a five-year project funded by a National Science Foundation grant, with the aim of developing and testing a novel science communication training curriculum based on intercultural communication theories. SCIP is a multi-institutional collaboration between Michigan State University and the University of Rhode Island.

SCIP includes a fellowship program in science communication for environmental scientists. As part of the fellowship, SCIP Fellows contribute episodes to the SCIP Podcast. This podcast is designed to help Fellows practice science communication skills. Each podcast episode will be ~10-20 minutes long.

The SCIP team seeks an experienced podcast editor to work part-time with the SCIP Podcast executive producer, Jason Jaacks (copied here). The podcast editor will be responsible for the following:

  • Using an appropriate non-linear editing application, editing raw interview and narration files into rough cuts for each of the 10 episodes produced by Fellows.

  • Incorporating feedback from SCIP Team and Fellows to produce a fine and final cut of each episode.

  • Mixing and mastering final files for 10 episodes, with an anticipated 20 hours of work hours per episode.

  • Creating and delivering Show Notes and Transcripts.

  • Delivering final episodes to distribution networks (SCIP website and appropriate digital networks like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, etc).

  • Maintain regular interactions with designated SCIP contact to provide updates on progress.

Hourly Rate: This project offers a competitive hourly rate of $50-$60, based on the editor’s experience.

Start Date: We seek an editor who can complete the outlined tasks within a 3-month period, beginning late May or early June 2024. There is potential to extend this contract for two additional seasons of the SCIP podcast.

To apply, please send a resume, cover letter, and 3 samples of audio that you have edited and mixed to Bruno Takahashi, btakahas@msu.edu. First consideration given to proposals received by April 12, 2024.
